In response to reports that the National Weather Service in Wilmington, N.C. issued a warning about jellyfish, Brad Dean, president and CEO of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, issued the following statement:
“Recent reports that the National Weather Service issue a warning related to jellyfish are not entirely accurate. A warning about rip currents, which was a precautionary advisory to ensure the safety of beach goers, was issued over the weekend. That warning coincided with reports of an abnormal presence of jellyfish in isolated areas of Myrtle Beach and caused undue confusion for beachgoers. Though no such report was officially issued by the National Weather Service, they did post an unofficial notice on their website informing the public to “keep an eye out for jellyfish.” Jellyfish are not new to the area. As annoying, and almost as common, as sunburn, jellyfish stings are painful, yet rarely pose a serious threat. As always, however, we encourage everyone to be diligent about protecting themselves and their families by staying alert when going in or near the water. Thankfully, there are no known reports of serious injury. Myrtle Beach remains one of the safest, cleanest beaches in America, thanks to the continuous monitoring and diligent work of our state and local government partners, as well as the quick and decisive action of Myrtle Beach lifeguards.”
