Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce Celebrating
National Travel and Tourism Week
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and Myrtle Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau are joining hundreds of cities, states and businesses across the country in the nation’s annual salute to the power of travel and tourism. This year marks the 34th annual National Travel and Tourism Week, and the celebration is set to run through May 13, 2017, with the theme “Faces of Travel.”
Each year, 18 million tourists visit the Myrtle Beach area, and MBACC is celebrating the week with activities and promotions for those visiting the Grand Strand.
The chamber’s visitors center on Oak Street will have refreshments throughout the week starting Monday. At our Airport Visitors Center, there will be refreshments periodically during the week and steel drum entertainment by Tim Peterman Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Online, we’ll be highlighting a few local faces of the hospitality industry, which represents about 83,000 people on the Grand Strand.
“This is a great way to recognize our visitors and celebrate the ‘thank you for visiting’ message we share all year long in Myrtle Beach,” said Brad Dean, president and CEO of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. “We know our 60 miles of beautiful coastline bring tourists here for the first time, but it’s our community and the warm Southern hospitality that brings them back, so we’re glad to celebrate the many faces of travel this year.”
National Travel and Tourism Week was established as National Tourism Week in 1983 when the U.S. Congress passed a joint resolution designating the week to be celebrated in May 1984. In a White House ceremony, President Ronald Reagan signed a presidential proclamation urging citizens to observe the week with “the appropriate ceremonies and activities.” By January 1986, industry leaders had formed a permanent full-time office at the U.S. Travel Association to sponsor the event and expand tourism awareness into year-round programs.
