Myrtle Beach, S.C. (November 14, 2018) – The Myrtle Beach area of South Carolina has partnered with ESPN Events, a division of ESPN, to host the inaugural Myrtle Beach Invitational, an early-season men’s college basketball tournament. The tournament will take place November 15, 16, and 18 at the HTC Center on Coastal Carolina University’s campus in Conway, SC.
“We are looking forward to welcoming the student athletes and supporters of these great universities, as well as ESPN and fans of college basketball, to the Myrtle Beach Area for the first-ever Myrtle Beach Invitational,” said Karen Riordan, president and CEO of Visit Myrtle Beach. “Aside from the action on the court, we’re ready to show college basketball fans the unique attractions and beautiful beaches they can enjoy during their stay.”
The bracket-format tournament will include 12 games over three days and will feature eight Division I college basketball programs, including Cal State Fullerton, Saint Joseph’s University, University of Central Florida, Valparaiso, Wake Forest, West Virginia, Western Kentucky and Monmouth College. The two remaining undefeated teams will face off in the championship game on Sunday, November 18.
“We are excited to launch the Myrtle Beach invitational,” said Pete Derzis, ESPN senior vice president of college sports programming and ESPN Events. “After collaborating with Visit Myrtle Beach and the city of Myrtle Beach to move last year’s Puerto Rico Tip-Off to the area due to the effects of Hurricane Maria, we saw first-hand the community’s outstanding facilities and passion for college basketball. Based on that experience, we determined that Myrtle Beach would be an ideal location for college basketball teams and their fans to visit each November.”
Guests can enjoy additional Myrtle Beach attractions while they’re in town, including 60 miles of uninterrupted, beautiful beaches; numerous activities and attractions for the entire family; unique shopping and dining experiences, and more.
