A historic Black church in Beaufort will unveil a sculpture of Harriet Tubman on the 161st anniversary of the raid she led that freed more than 700 slaves from Lowcountry plantations. Tubman is widely known for the work she did leading slaves through the Underground Railroad in Maryland to freedom before the Civil War, but her work during the Civil War is often unsung. The monument will be the first in the state marking her daring mission in June 1863 along the Combahee River. Check out this week's WIL Weekly to continue reading about the memorial and more! We're recognizing Asian American/Pacific Islander Month with our #WomanCrushWednesday Crystal Reed. According to her colleagues, not only does she work endlessly to keep the recreation department running smoothly, but she guides the directors and coordinators with grace, acceptance, and validation. She takes pride in the people who work with and for her and always shows up for them. "We couldn’t ask for a better director. Her leadership is making a difference in the lives of everyone around her." Crystal Reed

Two women and one man have been advanced to the full Legislature for a vote on June 5 to fill the vacancy on the S.C. Supreme Court created by the retirement of the Chief Justice. Contact your legislators and ask them to strongly consider the incredible accolades of the female jurist candidates and the void that exists by the absence of a woman on our state’s highest court.
